Where Should I Post? A Beginner’s Guide To Social Media For Small Businesses
If you’re trying to figure out where to start with marketing your wellness business online, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions we hear from small business owners and wellness professionals is:
“Which platform should I focus on?”
And it’s a fair question. Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube – they’re all fighting for your time, and it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed about which ones to engage with.
But here’s some good news: right now, social media still offers free access to your audience – if you post the right kind of content in the right way.
At a recent marketing event, we heard from one of the world’s best-known marketers, Gary Vaynerchuk. He’s spent years studying where people are paying attention online – and more importantly, how small businesses like yours can take advantage of it without spending a fortune.
What does Gary say?
In short:
“Your job is to figure out where your customers are paying attention and then post there. A lot.”
He calls this idea “day trading attention” – being smart and quick with how you show up on the platforms your audience is using right now.
So, where is your audience?
Let’s break it down in a simple way:
| Platform | Best For | Why Use It |
| Visual brands, wellness, beauty, food, lifestyle | Great for photos, reels, and building a brand personality | |
| Local businesses, community-driven services | Still strong for groups, events and older audiences | |
| B2B, coaching, professional services | Gary Vee says it’s like “being at the movies” – massive visibility right now, especially with video | |
| TikTok | Bold, creative content; younger audiences | Great for viral reach and personality-driven brands |
| Planning, lifestyle, retail | Ideal for product-based businesses and blog traffic | |
| YouTube | Educational content, tutorials, longer storytelling | Long-term growth and searchability |
| X (Twitter) | News, commentary, niche thought leadership | Less useful for most small businesses, but still good for some industries |
You don’t have to be everywhere. Start where your audience is most active and where you feel most confident showing up consistently.
The 4 Elements Of Great Social Content
Gary Vee talks a lot about something called Strategic Organic Content – that just means:
“Posting stuff people actually want to watch, read or engage with … in a way that makes sense for each platform.”
Here’s how to keep it simple:
- Know the platform – Are you using the right size and format? A square post works for Instagram, but not always for LinkedIn.
- Use built-in features – Platforms reward you for using their tools: like Stories, Reels, or polls.
- Make it relevant – Talk about things that matter on that platform. A trending sound on TikTok or a business tip on LinkedIn can get much more engagement.
- Join the culture – Every platform has its own vibe. Be aware of trends, hashtags and how people interact.
You don’t need a big budget or a video team. In fact, Gary Vee says people respond more to authentic, relatable content than polished ads. Just start posting – and pay attention to what works.
What’s Your Next Move?
If you’re just getting started, here’s what we recommend:
Step 1: Pick one platform where your audience spends time.
(For most B2B or service-based businesses, that’s LinkedIn. For lifestyle and wellness, it’s usually Instagram.)
Step 2: Post something 2–3 times a week.
Don’t overthink it. Talk about what you do, how you help and the results you’ve seen.
Step 3: Look at the data.
See what gets views, likes, or comments – and then do more of that.
One Last Tip: Don’t Chase Perfection
Gary reminded us of something really helpful:
“Nobody talks perfectly in real life, so don’t worry if your video isn’t perfect. Just show up consistently and add value.”
You don’t need to go viral. You just need to be visible, clear and consistent.
