how to add blog to WordPress website

Why WordPress Is Still One of the Smartest Choices for Your Website

If you’re building a website in 2025, there are dozens of platforms competing for your attention – Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify – the list goes on.

But WordPress continues to stand out for one key reason, and that is, control.

You’re not locked into someone else’s ecosystem when you use WordPress – something that turns out to be pretty invaluable in the world of web. You own the site, the content, and the experience. Whether you’re starting with a simple drag-and-drop page builder or building something completely custom – WordPress handles both without breaking a sweat. Here’s why we love it:

User Friendly Tools And Scalability

The platform gives you user-friendly tools like Kadence themes or page builders like Beaver Builder and Gutenberg, so you can drag, drop, and launch without writing a line of code. But it’s also built to scale. Start with a single landing page, then add booking forms, a blog, online shop, or gated content – whatever you need, when you need it.

It’s SEO Ready And Great For Plugins

From an SEO perspective, WordPress was built with publishing in mind. Paired with tools like Yoast or Rank Math, it’s one of the most search-friendly platforms available. The plugin ecosystem is massive too – over 59,000 plugins means you can integrate with CRMs, payment tools, analytics, and email platforms with just a few clicks.

The Community And Support Is Second To None

Perhaps most importantly, WordPress powers over 40% of the internet. That means whatever you’re trying to do, there’s a tutorial (or a developer) available to help. WordPress gives you long-term flexibility without sacrificing ease-of-use, making it a platform that actually grows with your business.

If you’re planning to grow, it’s a platform that grows with you.

How To Add A Blog Post In WordPress (The Practical Way)

First things first… If you’re using a website built by us, we’ve already added the Yoast SEO plugin for you.

Yoast is a popular WordPress plugin – available in both free and paid versions – that helps you write blog posts that perform better in search engines, even if you’re completely new to SEO. It gives real-time feedback on things like keyword use, headings, image tags, and how your post will appear on Google.

We recommend using Yoast (free or paid) on any WordPress website. It doesn’t write your content for you – but it makes sure the structure, keywords, and readability are working in your favour.

If your website was built in WordPress, there’s a good chance your developer has already set up a blog “hub” – a page that automatically pulls through every blog post you publish. That means you don’t need to create a page for your blog content – just start writing new posts under the “Posts” section.

Here’s how to do that – step by step.

Step 1: Go to ‘Posts’ → ‘Add New’

In the left-hand menu of your WordPress dashboard, hover over Posts and click Add New.
This is where you’ll write and publish your blog article.

Step 2: Add Your Post Title

This is your blog headline – and it should be the exact question or topic your audience is searching for.

For example:

  • How to Cut Cleaning Costs Without Sacrificing Standards
  • What TUPE Means for School Cleaning Contracts

Make it clear, helpful, and use words your audience actually types into Google.

Step 3: Use the Yoast SEO Panel to Structure Your Post

With Yoast installed, scroll down the page to find the Yoast SEO panel beneath the content editor. This is where you optimise your blog post for search.

Focus Keyphrase

Enter your main keyword (e.g. how to add blog to WordPress website).
Yoast will analyse how well your content supports it and suggest improvements.

SEO Title & Meta Description

  • Keep your title under 60 characters
  • Keep your meta description between 155–160 characters
  • Use your keyphrase in both – but naturally

These appear in search results and help people decide whether to click.

Image Alt Text

When you upload images, include descriptive alt text – it improves accessibility and helps search engines understand what your images show.

Step 4: Write and Format Your Content

You can write directly in the editor or launch a builder like Beaver Builder if your site uses it.

As you write, use:

  • Clear headings (H2s, H3s) to split sections
  • Short paragraphs (2–4 lines)
  • Bullet points and lists to improve scan-ability
  • Internal links to relevant services or posts

Step 5: Assign a Category

On the right-hand side, you’ll see a Categories panel. Tick the category or categories your post belongs in – e.g. “School Cleaning” or “Energy Efficiency.”

This helps readers filter your content and helps you organise your blog long-term.

Scroll down to the Featured Image panel. Upload a strong, relevant visual (ideally 1200x630px for best results across social and email). This image will display on your blog listing page and social media previews.

Step 7: Review Your Yoast Feedback

Yoast will now show:

  • An SEO score (green, orange, or red)
  • A readability score (based on sentence structure, headings, etc.)

Use this as a guide – not a rule. The goal is to make the post clear and helpful, not robotic.

Step 8: Preview and Publish

Click Preview to see what the post will look like when live. Once everything looks right, hit Publish in the top-right corner. And you’re done. Your post is live and should appear automatically on your blog hub page.

What Makes a Good Blog Post?

Posting regularly is a great start – but posting with clarity and structure is what makes your blog valuable to both people and search engines. You also want to be posting things that your audience actually want the answers to. Not just what you as a business wants to say. Start with one helpful post every fortnight. Use your own customer questions as inspiration – they’re already telling you what content they need. When a client asks “How do you handle contract renewals?” or “What’s included in your standard service?”, that’s your next blog post waiting to be written.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind when writing:

1. Stick to one topic per post

One question, one theme. If you’re tempted to cover two topics, split them into two posts instead. Your readers (and Google) will thank you for the clarity.

2. Use headings properly

Structure your content with H2s for main sections and H3s for subpoints.
This helps readers skim and gives Google context.

3. Keep it readable

Short paragraphs, simple language, and breaking long thoughts into smaller blocks makes your content more digestible.

4. Include relevant links

Add links to your own related blogs or pages (internal links) and external sources if you’re quoting stats or facts. This builds authority and keeps readers engaged with your content.

5. Aim for 600 – 1200 words

This is long enough to cover the topic with substance but short enough to keep readers engaged and interested in what you have to say.

Using Yoast to Optimise Your Blog Post

Once your content is drafted, Yoast can help you fine-tune it for performance.

Here’s what to focus on inside the plugin:

  1. Focus Keyphrase

Use a phrase your audience might actually search for. Yoast helps you measure how well your post supports that term across titles, headings, text, and images.

  1. SEO Title & Meta Description

Make sure these are:

  • Brief
  • Relevant
  • Human (not stuffed with keywords)
  • Contain your keyphrase
  1. Readability

Yoast will suggest shorter sentences, fewer passive voice constructions and more subheadings.  Treat this as a guide rather than aiming for perfection – clarity matters more than a perfect score.

  1. Alt Text

Each image should have alt text – short, descriptive text explaining what’s shown. This helps with both accessibility and image search visibility.

Consistency Beats Volume

You don’t need dozens of posts to get results. You need the right posts – written clearly, structured properly, and published consistently.

The beauty of WordPress and Yoast working together is that you don’t need to be an SEO expert to create content that performs. The tools guide you, but your expertise and understanding of your customers’ needs is what makes the content valuable.

Blogging isn’t about impressing search engines or hitting arbitrary word counts. It’s about demonstrating your knowledge and helping potential customers understand how you solve their problems. When you consistently publish helpful content that addresses real questions, you’re building more than SEO authority – you’re building trust.

Your blog becomes a resource that works around the clock, answering questions, addressing concerns, and showing prospects that you understand their challenges. And that’s far more valuable than any single marketing campaign.

The value of blogging isn’t in clicks – it’s in clarity. When you help people understand your expertise through valuable content, the business results follow naturally. Start with one post, optimise it properly using the steps above, and build from there. Your future customers are already searching for the answers you can provide. You just need to get them down on digital paper!
