Should Wellness Professionals Use Instagram? Here’s Why (And How To Do It Well)

If you’re a therapist, coach, nutritionist, or any kind of wellness practitioner, chances are someone’s told you, “You should be on Instagram.”

But you might be wondering –  is it really worth the effort?

Here’s the honest answer: Instagram can absolutely help grow your business, but only if you use it in a way that works for you. You don’t need to go viral or post daily to see results. You just need to show up consistently, be clear about what you offer, and make it easy for the right people to find and connect with you.

Let’s break down why Instagram makes sense for wellness professionals, and how to use it without burning out.

Why Instagram Works For Wellness Businesses

Instagram is a space where people go to be inspired, learn, feel seen, and scroll through content that reflects what they’re going through. That makes it a natural fit for wellness services.

Whether you’re helping people manage pain, improve mental health, build resilience or simply feel better in themselves, your ideal clients are already on Instagram –  often following similar professionals, liking quotes about wellbeing, or searching for tips.

The platform is highly visual, but it’s also a place where trust is built through small, repeated interactions. And in wellness, trust is everything.

What Should You Post (Without It Taking Over Your Life)?

You don’t need a full-time content calendar or a studio setup. A simple rhythm of one or two posts a week can be more than enough if your content is clear, helpful, and personal.

Start by sharing what your potential clients need to know. Think about the questions people ask during sessions, or the things they often get wrong about what you do. A short video explaining a common myth, a reminder of your availability, or a glimpse into your clinic setup can all help build familiarity and trust.

You might share:

  • A short client story (anonymised or with permission)
  • A tip for managing stress or pain between appointments
  • Your own perspective on a seasonal theme like sleep, energy, or overwhelm
  • A post introducing you and your approach

Above all, let people see the human behind the service. If you can show your face or voice now and then, even better. That’s often what gives someone the confidence to book.

Do You Need Hashtags, Reels, Stories And All the Extras?

No, you don’t need to use every feature Instagram offers. The best place to start is wherever you feel most comfortable.

If you like speaking to camera, short videos (Reels or Stories) might come naturally. If you prefer photos or written content, stick with feed posts or carousels. Stories are great for sharing quick reminders, booking links, or updates in the moment.

Hashtags can help with visibility, but they’re not everything. Choose ones that reflect your service and location –  for example, #TherapistBristol or #BackPainRelief. A few targeted ones will do far more than a random list of 30!

How to Grow Your Audience (Without Playing The Algorithm Game)

Growing on Instagram doesn’t mean chasing followers. It means showing up in the right way for the right people.

Start with your profile. Make sure your bio is clear, your photo is friendly and professional, and your location is easy to see. Let people know what you do, who you help, and how to book.

Then post consistently, even if it’s just once a week. Ask thoughtful questions in your captions, respond to comments and messages, and be open to conversations. That’s where trust is built.

You can also collaborate with other local businesses, wellness professionals, or community groups. A joint Instagram Live, a referral post, or even a friendly tag in a story can help widen your reach in an authentic way.

Remember, quality always beats quantity. Ten ideal clients are worth more than 1,000 passive followers.

Should You Run Ads On Instagram?

If you’re ready to grow faster or promote something specific – like an offer, event or free consultation – Instagram Ads can be a useful tool.

But don’t just boost a post. Instead, use Meta Ads Manager (which runs ads for both Facebook and Instagram) so you can properly control:

  • Who sees your ad (based on location, interests, job titles and more)
  • What the ad says and where it leads (ideally to a booking or landing page)
  • How long it runs and what you spend

You don’t need a big budget. Starting with £5 to £10 per day is enough to test what works. The key is to have a clear goal –  not just clicks, but actual bookings or enquiries.

And once you know your numbers –  for example, that one new client is worth £200+ over time –  spending £50 to acquire that client becomes a smart investment.

You Don’t Need To Do It All –  Just Start

Instagram should feel manageable, not overwhelming. If it’s stressing you out, you’re doing too much.

Focus on being consistent, not perfect. Share things that are useful, honest, and reflective of the way you support people. Trust builds slowly, and Instagram is a brilliant place to show up gently, helpfully and with heart.
